This is Our History
Sperry Marine, a distinguished name in the maritime industry, carries forward the rich heritage of three pioneering companies: Decca, C. Plath, and Sperry Gyrocompass.
Founded in 1997 and headquartered in the United Kingdom, our legacy is built on innovation and expertise. Since becoming a part of Northrop Grumman Corporation in 2001, Sperry Marine has continued to lead as a global supplier of advanced navigation, communication, and steering control systems for both commercial marine and naval markets.
Sperry Gyrocompass
Founded in 1910 by the visionary American inventor Elmer Ambrose Sperry, Sperry Gyrocompass was established to commercialise his groundbreaking navigational technologies, including the marine gyrostabiliser and the gyrocompass. These innovations played a pivotal role in both World War I and World War II, serving the Allied navies with crucial navigation tools.
Today, the spirit of revolutionary invention continues to drive Sperry Marine, pushing the boundaries of maritime technology and safety.
Timeline of Sperry Gyrocompass
C. Plath
For nearly 150 years, the name C. Plath has been synonymous with the highest standards of precision, reliability, and quality in maritime navigation. Renowned for their magnetic compasses, C. Plath has made a significant mark on the hearts of skippers across generations.
Today, their magnetic compass remains an essential part of every ship’s basic equipment, revered for its ability to operate completely independent of electrical power and satellite signals. This enduring reliability underpins the legacy of C. Plath and continues to influence the core technologies of Sperry Marine.
Decca Radar
Originally a British gramophone manufacturer known for its Decca records, Decca Radar marked its transition into military and marine engineering during World War II. In August 1949, Decca Radar pioneered marine navigation technology with the launch of its first marine radar, the Model 159. This innovation led to the development of the first true motion radar, the first anti-collision radar system, and the first Type Approved colour radar.
These groundbreaking advancements set new standards in maritime safety and navigational aids, reinforcing Decca Radar's legacy in the annals of maritime history.
